Alaska 2004 Wolf

This was probably one of the top moments in my trip to Alaska.  Wolves numbers are up but it’s still a very small percentage of visitors who actual get to see one.  We had seen the mate to this one just moments before she walked by us.  The male is a black wolf and we saw it over 300 yards away guarding the den.  Needless to say I didn’t have equipment that was able to get him on film and recognize it as a wolf. 

We watched him for a few minutes when we looked up and here came the female walking down the road right by us.  It was one of those special moments in the wild when you have an experience that few others have had.

A wolf goes by you at 3 yards, it gets your heart pumping and as quickly as she appears she disappears back into the tundra.
